About BORA

A zero-cost, project-based research training academy and its digital home at borabd.org — built on the premise that high-impact research requires attention and time, not capital.

The problem, and why now

Bangladesh has no shortage of capable science graduates. What it lacks is a structured, affordable bridge between “I finished my degree” and “I have published research.” Wet-lab research requires capital most students and young professionals simply do not have. Meanwhile dry-lab, computational, and epidemiological research — genomics, AMR surveillance, disease modelling, meta-analysis — requires only a laptop, an internet connection, and guidance.

The model is already proven. Remote, project-based, cohort-driven programmes have turned motivated but resource-constrained students across the Global South into published computational scientists, entirely free to the learner, using open datasets, open-source tools, and volunteer mentorship. What is missing is a version scoped to Bangladesh’s own problems.

What is missing for Bangladesh specifically

  • Local relevance — no existing academy is scoped to Bangladesh’s One Health, AMR, and agricultural-export data problems.
  • No local archive — there is no equivalent open archive to house and showcase locally produced research output.
  • No feedback loop — global programmes are highly competitive and are not designed to feed a Bangladesh-specific alumni-mentor pipeline.
  • The window is now — a growing pool of English-medium STEM graduates, rising internet penetration, and free AI-assisted learning tools have made self-directed technical training far more achievable than even three years ago.

Roadmap

Twelve months, four phases

Months 0–3

Foundation

Domain secured; website MVP built; two chief advisors and initial core mentors recruited; curriculum and authorship policy finalised.

Months 3–6

Pilot cohort

First cohort of 20–30 students on a single track; run the full Stage 0–3 gate end to end.

Months 6–12

Scale

Open additional tracks; grow the mentor base via train-the-trainer; produce first publications; hold the first virtual symposium.

Year 2+

Institutionalise

Pursue university MoUs; launch a talent-placement page; seek light sponsorships; build national visibility.

Zero-cost sustainability

  • Train-the-trainer — no paid teaching staff; published alumni supply the next cohort’s mentorship capacity.
  • Free-tier infrastructure — hosting, backend, and learning content run on free tiers indefinitely.
  • In-kind participation — advisors and mentors are compensated in credit, authorship, and visibility rather than salary.
  • Optional later revenue — once credibility is established, a talent-placement page and light institutional sponsorship can cover the domain and occasional prizes, without ever charging students.

Risks we take seriously

  • Volunteer burnout — the stage-gate filters for genuine motivation early and distributes mentorship load.
  • Quality control — mandatory mentor sign-off plus plagiarism and data-integrity screening before submission.
  • Credibility — start with preprints and workshop presentations; lean on advisors’ institutional standing for early legitimacy.
  • Authorship disputes — the policy is pre-agreed and communicated at Stage 0.
  • Ethics — open or properly de-identified data only, with an ethics checklist for any human-health project.

What we are actually claiming

BORA does not need grants, laboratories, or paid staff to change the shape of Bangladeshi science. It needs a clear pipeline, a handful of committed mentors, and students willing to put in the work. Every piece of this model has already been proven at global scale. Our task is to point it at Bangladesh’s own problems.
